When Werner Herzog found out that the monkeys he purchased to be in his film "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" were being sent to someone else, he pretended to be a veterinarian and stole them back. He loaded all 400 of them into his jeep, used them in the film, and set them free into the wild.
German actor Klaus Kinski was a little hard to work with on set. Most notably, during the filming of Aguirre, Wrath of God, Kinski hit a random extra in the head with a prop sword. Apparently, Kinski hit him so hard, that only the extra's helmet prevented his skull from being split in half.

In 1971 Werner Herzog was location scouting for Aguirre, Wrath of God and canceled his flight aboard LANSA Flight 508 due to a schedule change. The plane was struck by lightening and everyone died except for one woman who he made a documentary about in 2000 called Wings of Hope.
